Outside, the sounds of gunfire and heavy artillery. Inside, an awful silence. The minister lay on the floor, gasping, one hand clutched around their ragged throat, arterial blood soaking richly into the carpet; the other, reaching out to the door that stood empty in front of them.

The Medic - Eternity

A Normal Life?

The Medic and The Scout, having made it off the island together, did their best to live a normal life. Of course, the world is not so kind, especially nowadays. Returning to one's clinic is all well and good, but the sudden appearance of a cult of faith-based healers whose abilities actually work somewhat reduced the demand for traditional medical services.

I will speak but briefly of what came after.

I watched Belinda, her eyes blinking in the cold light of the square, grey room, not unlike - so I thought - the place where I had spent my novitiate. The men were taking down every word she said with some kind of inverted wireless device.

Unmistakable! There it was, an inky black plume of smoke snaking its way into the mist-grey sky. The caption removed the telescope from her eye, collapsing it with a decisive thump on her thigh. She gestured to the horizon.

The Fate of the Island

Day 50

Here follows my very first diary entry, I suppose. It's an odd sort of thing to do - at least, it feels odd knowing what we know about writing on this island. It is somewhat disquieting to imagine that my words are to remain here, indelible, no matter what else might befall us. I shall be certain to use some of the very finest words I know, and to avoid making any errors if I can help it. I should like to think of myself as a proficient writer, although I must con…

The Fate of the World

You can never go home....

"There has been an extraordinary development in the trial of Wulandari Castellana. The defence have argued that - whilst technically being the person who murdered her husband, Haweeyo Castellana, as well as several of their mutual work colleagues at a dinner party at their family home - she was under the control of the narrative aspect of 'Despair' at the time - and therefore not responsible for her actions.

Brendan Shaw stumbles again just as he reaches the stream. Covered in cuts and bruises, his trousers torn, he crawls a little way forwards, cups his hands in the path of the cool water, lifts them trembling to his mouth. He drinks. He is cold, hungry, exhausted, but at least the storm is over. He looks out across the panorama below him - nobody is coming, nobody has come for him. Nobody

Jennet Waite - Eternity

Not so very long ago, not so far from this place, a young man was making his way down the track that led to the little cove that nestled tight between the high cliffs. And as he went he whistled a half-forgotten tune, and he wondered whether honeysuckle was poisonous, and his name was Ljuba Koci - but none of that really matters. What matters is that he was about to meet someone truly remarkable.

Katherine placed her hand gently on the trunk of the large horse chestnut tree. The bark was warm with sunlight, and felt crisp and coarse beneath her fingertips. This was an activity she had often enjoyed, both for the immediate physical sensation of the act, as well as for the giddy feeling of terror: the inescapable truth that one thing could be beholden to two opposing principles.

See the temple raised up to the heavens, high atop the cliffs above the ocean - stone on stone, meticulously ordered, taller than mountains. Towers rise at every side and angle, beacons burning brightly at their summits - surely as the seasons go on turning, all turn to ashes.

Stevie Mira

So take you to Long Melford high,

See malted barley, wheat and rye

A gentle woman, sad yet true

Ensconced herself there for to brew.

Her drink, though, does not bring her joy,

For yet her heart yearns for a boy ---

Nay, for a man, a doctor wise,

And three of them worked together, huddled, hunched over like old men, casting their eyes across the writing that was scattered across the island. Kneeling before the words scratched into rock in gesture almost like prayer---

They stood, one at a time - Ljuba first, and then her companions, Aisha, Armitage. 'Perhaps we should,' Aisha said, casting her eyes at the scrawlings of the author she knew not, and so it was agreed, the three began to write.

William Campbell / Small Comforts

William's B&B was a beautiful one. In the time that he had been away on the island --- longer than anyone could have expected --- it had grown only more so, the honeysuckle and roses that covered the lintel had only grown larger, the blooms of early summer looking radiant in the fading glow of the sunlight, that particular luminosity of the hour just before the sun slips below the horizon.
