Belinda Crane - Eternity

I will speak but briefly of what came after.

I watched Belinda, her eyes blinking in the cold light of the square, grey room, not unlike - so I thought - the place where I had spent my novitiate. The men were taking down every word she said with some kind of inverted wireless device.

“You must understand”, she said, “the world has to know. I want to make a difference.”

“We understand, Mrs Crane,” they nodded, eyes implacable and overcast, like stones at the bottom of a pond.

“If you don't tell them, then I will,” she said, and she struggled for a time before they detained her.

They could not hold her long. My power saw to that. I almost regretted it later, seeing her enterprise - the Institution. But it was so magnificent that I could only watch from the darkness and applaud.
