Day 1

Me? In all honesty, I'm not sure how I survived. It was so dark, and so cold, and… I remember reaching out - please, please help me - but I suppose kindness and conscience are out of fashion, these days. And so many have perished - I can't bear to look down the beach at those… things the sailors pulled ashore. What about you? Do you remember how you reached land?

- Winter Black

It's horrid. I spent half the night being thrown around by the waves, and the rest of it lying awake on this frightful tract of sand. Did you hear the screams? At first, I thought it must have been more people drowning, but I could swear it was coming from further inland, towards the lake. A great deal of shouting and screaming and crashing around - quite the last thing one wishes to hear while lying soaked to the skin on an unknown shore.

- Alice Drummond

Has anyone seen Lundy? The bosun, I mean. Yes, I know she was heading out to check the lie of the land, but that was hours ago, and I'd like to know what she's found out. If you see her, tell her I'm looking for her, won't you? She knows what she's about, that one.

- Daniel Brander

The children seem disturbed by everything and I don't really know what to say to them. It doesn't help that I can't tell the two Lizzies apart. Still, at least they seem to be getting on with each other. And that Drummond girl too.

- Anita Smith

The outlook isn't brilliant. While I'm hoping that more will wash up over the next few days, as things stand we don't have much: most people washed ashore with only the clothes they were wearing. From a quick look and Ms Lund's investigations there's plenty of driftwood to make fires, and the hills are apparently spotted with sheep, so we should be fine for food and shelter. My main concern is the children - perhaps some form of group effort to keep those who can't fend for themselves sustained?

- Samuel Peake

They must grieve, of course… but we cannot allow ourselves to succumb to grief. We must, all of us, prepare to survive. I intend to call a meeting, this evening… when we have a little more information about our predicament. Send the word out. We will assemble on the strand, and decide upon a plan for the days ahead.

- Veysel Köprülü

Weather Report

The skies above the island are clear and sunny, but there's a cold breeze coming off the ocean. A little way out to sea, however, the storm front is clearly visible: a band of grey cloud that encircles the island. At present, it seems, it would be a mistake to venture too far from land.
